During 2022-2023, ocean carriers used some of those reserves for their own buying sprees to expand their footprints. While adding to the ocean carrier bunker fuel costs, they are being compensated.. "The Red Sea diversions are a good thing for ocean carriers. The big question mark is the duration of the diversions and the surcharges the ocean carriers can charge. Those two regions have steadily taken market share away from the West Coast ports, with shippers also benefitting from investments in ports infrastructure. "The West Coast ports have strengthened infrastructure," Iampieri said.

Uber is going into the Dow Transports on Monday, marking the first change to the index since Dec. 7, 2021, when Old Dominion replaced Kansas City Southern. Under Dow Theory, the Transports should confirm a new high in the Dow Industrials. Uber is a funny add because unlike many of the other index components, it's not really a shipping company. The add likely reflects the Dow Transports index committee's belief that this is a transportation company, even if it just shuttles people instead of packages. This follows a well-known pattern called the S & P inclusion effect.

Walgreens has the dubious distinction of being one of the stocks that has had the shortest duration in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At $22, Walgreens has the lowest stock price in the index, which traditionally would make it a target for replacement. "Since the indexes are price weighted, the Index Committee evaluates stock price when considering a company for inclusion. Right now, the highest priced stock, UnitedHealth Group , is more than 23 times the value of the lowest priced stock, Walgreens. Finally, one wonders how Uber executives feel about the decision to put them into the Dow Jones Transportation Index.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

Record highs in the stock market have yet to be confirmed by a more than 100-year-old indicator. Dow Theory says both indexes need to move in tandem to confirm a bull market in stocks. AdvertisementRecord highs in the stock market have yet to be confirmed by a more than 100-year-old indicator: Dow Theory. The current divergence between the two major stock market averages represents a tactical risk for US equities in 2024, according to a recent note from Bank of America. The continued weakness in the Dow Jones Transportation Average is a red flag because transportation stocks are viewed as a leading indicator for the stock market and economy.

A decline in transportation stocks is sending a worrying signal about the broader stock market. Transportation stocks are viewed as a leading indicator because they point to the movement of goods around the country. AdvertisementAdvertisementA steady decline in transportation stocks is sending a worrying signal about the broader stock market and its chances to stage a year-end rally. If companies are seeing a slowdown in growth and their stock prices fall, it could be a grim warning for the rest of the economy and stock market. AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd if the latter happens, crucial support levels would be broken and investors' highly anticipated year-end rally in the stock market, partly explained by bullish seasonals, would be on thin ice.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has gained 3.2% this month, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The Dow’s gains suggest that investors are starting to buy more economically sensitive stocks as recent data show inflation slowing. That, in turn, indicates they’re becoming increasingly optimistic that the economy could avoid a recession. Conventional Wall Street wisdom says gains in the blue-chip index tend to precede rallies across the broader market. The Dow Jones Transport Average Index, an index of 20 stocks including railroad, trucker, airline and freight companies, has gained 24% this year.

Dow theory: a primer The rules around the Dow Theory were formulated more than 120 years ago by Charles Dow himself (though he himself never used the term Dow Theory). "Dow Theory was formulated when the Dow Industrials were stuff makers, and the railroads were stuff movers," Tom McClellan, editor of the McClellan Market Report, told me. New Dow Theory also confirms a new high There have been attempts to formulate a "New Dow Theory." Tuesday, the S & P 500 closed at 4,554 (up 19% this year), and the Nasdaq closed at 14,354 (up 37% year-to-date). The S & P 500 is up 9% since May 1.

SummarySummary Companies Futures up: Dow 0.01%, S&P 0.06%, Nasdaq 0.09%June 8 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures were largely flat on Thursday as government bond yields hovered near recent highs on worries that major central banks could keep raising interest rates. The benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (.IXIC) closed lower on Wednesday, with megacap stocks leading declines as U.S. bond yields rose after the Bank of Canada (BoC) surprised markets with an interest rate hike. The 2-year Treasury yield , which tends to move in step with short-term rate expectations, rose for a third day to 4.56%, as investors await the Federal Reserve meet next week. Eventually we don't think the Fed will hike in July," Jefferies strategist Mohit Kumar said. They see a 50% chance of a rate hike in July.

NEW YORK, April 28 (Reuters) - Economically sensitive areas of the U.S. stock market are flashing warnings over growth, even as major equity indexes edge higher. Beneath the surface, however, areas of the market tied to economic sentiment such as transports, semiconductors and small-cap stocks dropped in April, while so-called defensive sectors are outperforming. “People are starting to more defensively position themselves,” said Aaron Dunn, co-head of the value equity team at Eaton Vance. "They are talking about demand being down and they are ridiculously important shipping companies,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. Reporting by Lewis Krauskopf; Editing by Ira Iosebashvili and David GregorioOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
This helped push the Dow Jones Transport Average index (.DJT) down 3.6%, for its biggest one-day drop since September. The Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) dropped 238.05 points, or 1.98%, to 11,799.16 in its biggest one-day percentage decline since March 9. The KBW Regional Banking index (.KRX) dropped 3.9% as First Republic (FRC.N) shares fell 49%, hitting a record low. General Motors Co (GM.N) shares fell 4% after it cautioned that 2022 price gains will not last as the year goes on, even as it lifted full-year profit and cash flow forecasts. On U.S. exchanges 10.78 billion shares traded compared with the 10.32 billion average for the last 20 sessions.
Delta posted a quarterly loss and said consumers’ behavior is shifting in ways that can be hard to predict. Photo: ed jones/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesEconomically sensitive stocks, like those of transportation and small-cap companies, are trailing the broader market, reflecting growing investor concern about a potential recession. The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 large U.S. companies ranging from airlines to railroads to truckers, has underperformed the Dow Jones Industrial Average by about 8.3 percentage points since early February. Shares of Norfolk Southern Corp., American Airlines Group Inc. and J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. have dropped at least 10% over the same period.
There is a bearish divergence developing between the Dow Jones Transportation Average and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. While the transports index made a higher high in January, the transportation average did not. Dow Theory is a more than 100-year old technical indicator that suggests if transportation companies are doing well, so should the broader economy. Dow theory suggests that the relationship between the two indexes could send a broader signal to investors about the future direction of the stock market. "These bearish divergences into late 2022 and early 2023 show a disconnected equity market, keeping the bearish signal for Dow Theory from early 2022 intact," Suttmeier said.
U.S. labor costs increased at their slowest pace in a year in the fourth quarter as wage growth slowed, bolstering expectations of the Fed slowing the pace of its interest rate increases. "As the Fed meeting begins today, they'll be looking at every index that could give them a better judgment on inflation and this is one of them," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities LLC. "Labor costs are still high, but this means costs have come down, and that's a key factor for future wage inflation." United Parcel Service (UPS.N) jumped 4% on strong quarterly earnings, boosting the Dow Jones Transport Average index (.DJT). The S&P index recorded four new 52-week highs and no new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 32 new highs and 14 new lows.
Forward Air shares are delivering on something few companies have as the year draws to a close. The stock is beating the Dow Jones Transportation Average and the S&P 500 in the fourth quarter. Forward Air CEO Tom Schmitt recently spoke with CNBC's Frank Holland about the holiday shipping season, the volume his customers are expecting for Lunar New Year, and the supply chain, trucking, and pricing outlook for 2023. Schmitt said spot rates are down and that "transactional softness" will remain, but contract will continue to be strong. "But I expect more normal ... closer to pre-pandemic with this year Lunar New Year, but we're not there yet," Schmitt said.
Fears about the Federal Reserve's plan to keep raising U.S. interest rates have weighed heavily on equities since its policy meeting last week. Among the S&P 500's 11 major sectors, the energy index (.SPNY) gained most, finishing up 1.52% as crude oil prices rose. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.12-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.06-to-1 ratio favored advancers. The S&P 500 posted 1 new 52-week highs and 14 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 64 new highs and 399 new lows. On U.S. exchanges 10.52 billion shares changed hands, compared with the 11.15 billion average for the last 20 trading days.
Transportation stocks were hit by FedEx’s plan to raise shipping rates amid lower volumes of goods moving globally. Shares of transportation companies are falling twice as fast as the hard-hit U.S. stock market, reflecting investors’ expectations that a recession is likely ahead. The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 large U.S. companies ranging from airlines to railroads to truckers, has declined 12% this month. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are down about half that much.
